I have had that same problem. its hard sometimes
One way around it is if you have ssh access to a Unix-ish machine elsewhere on the internet, you can use SSH tunnels to connect to muds.

Well… I understood about none of that. But this is the only decent comp I have. Probably won't have net access off-campus for a few years the way things are going right now. What about proxies? Can I do anything with them?

I think Londo is correct.. ssh is a protocol which connects you to a machine (usually using Linux or other unix based system) and then use it remotely. I think that's the only way to play if your campus has a shitty firewall. Correct me if i'm wrong though, i'm not positive! you might want to ask your college's IT staff.

Of course, the problem with that is finding a machine SSH to in the first place. :)
More specifically SSH stands for Secure SHell. It is a type of protocol that is used to connects to another host using encrypted communication. Basically Telnet with security, hence the name Secure Shell. Requires you to store encryption keys from the host so you can talk to it properly.
Probably more info on the internet about it. :) But still, the hard part would be to FIND a machine to tunnel through. ;)
I'd also follow syn's advice and ask the IT staff about it. The worst that can probably happen is them saying No to letting you through.

Well I asked them about it, and they said they didn't know what I was talking about, but the answer was no. They said I have no business playing games, or even talking online in college anyway.

They haven't taken away IM'ing yet, but I think they're planning to. As it stands right now:
Noone can access MSN.
Sometimes we can't access email, esp. hotmail.
Muds can't be accessed.
Most online games (including Yahoo games and whatnot) cannot be accessed.
Oneplayer games like candystand type things can't be accessed.
But yeah, if they take away instant messaging altogether, they're gonna be in deep shit with families. Some folks can only communicate that way, since maybe the family can't afford to call long distance, and we can't call long distance from here.
I believe we have a curfew now.
Might've mentioned this before, but this is funny…
The network shuts down every little while or so. They've got it doing this to remove spyware. They think thatll do it. They also believe that this is possible with a virus scanner. They tell the students that we don't know what we're talking about when we tell them about things like adaware.
Also sometimes when the network is down, or certain things are inaccessible, they tell us that all of us must have viruses because the network is fine.
They even insist that all ports are open.
Oh btw, we can't DL music. Not even off the web. We can't dl video files either. and by music, i include MIDIs as well as MP3's and such btw.
Sex is not allowed on campus. Drinking isn't allowed, even if you're of age for it. The baseball team gets to do pretty much whatever they want, and blah, I hate this school but I love it at the same time. Some of the academic admin are great. But most of the residence life staff, and obviously the computer admin, are lying, cheating bastards.
We're pretty certain that SOMEONE who works here, robbed several rooms over spring break. It had to have been. the doors and windows were locked tight. So they had to have had a key to lock the doors back.
Sorry, venting.

I swear I think the only reason I haven't gotten fed up and quit yet is 1) I'm afraid my uncle, who's supporting my pretty much, will be upset and leave me on my own. and 2) i have friends here that i won't get to see if i leave. at this point in my life... i need my friends.... badly...

Xevira, no need to hate dorms, and that isn't at all representative of dorms in general. I love my dorm, and if I wasn't on campus here, I wouldn't have so many friends. Hell, I'd barely have any friends to hang out with, since all my high school friends live on campus somewhere or other. It's great meeting lots of cool, new people.. especially when there's someone among those people who you're in love with (or at least think you are.. that's just as good, right?!).
